It was said by John Adams that our Constitution was meant for a moral and religious people. The document was the product of men; the spiritual impulses that would be needed to give it life would have to come from a higher source. In America, a tradition of revivals along Evangelical lines has traditionally given shape to that fervent religiosity so characteristic of life in the US, especially the South. Among the heroes who worked against man, nature, and the devil himself to help realize that vision was the great Methodist missionary, Peter Cartwright.
